Alexander, J. M. (2) Born: 1822 in Courtland County, New York. Died: Occupation: Lawyer, Fruit-grower Town: Winfield County: Cowley Party: Democrat District: Unknown Chamber: Senate 1871 | Never served. According to Cutler's History he was elected to the Senate in 1871 but was denied the seat as it was determined that the district was not entitled to a senator. Came to Kansas in 1854. Married in 1846 to Anna T. Atwater, niece of the Rev. Gardiner Spring, famous theologian/author of 19th century America. In 1882 J.M. Alexander moved with his family to Florida, but he still retained tracts of land in Cowley County. He was known as "Colonel," a title derived by commission from Governor Bigler of Pennsylvania, who appointed him one of his aides in 1854.
