Getting Started

1. Get an application

Download an application or call 1-800-362-0699 to get an application mailed to you.

2. Complete the application

Applications must be signed by a certifying authority who is not the applicant themselves or a relative of the applicant. NLS will accept complete contact information for the certifying authority in lieu of a signature on an application that is filled out online and submitted electronically via email.

Certifying Authorities include:

Doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathy, ophthalmologist, optometrist, psychologist, registered nurse, therapist, or professional staff of hospitals, institutions, and public or welfare agencies (such as an educator, social worker, case worker, counselor, rehabilitation teacher, certified reading specialist, school psychologist, superintendent, or librarian).

3. Return Application

Completed and signed applications may be scanned and emailed to KTB@ks.gov or mailed to:

State Library of Kansas Talking Books Office
1 Kellogg Circle, Box 4055
Emporia, KS 66801

Upon receipt, applications are immediately reviewed, processed, and applicants are contacted by email or phone. Incomplete applications or those lacking the necessary signature are returned.

4. Receive material in the mail

You will receive a digital player and a cartridge with your first book requests, an introductory packet that includes information about catalogs, BARD instructions, a letter with codes permitting access to the online catalog, and programs offered from Kansas Talking Books.

Within a month after receiving the player and books, you will be contacted by a librarian to review status of service. Changes and updates are made to accounts as needed.
